Fresh Picks (v.2)
These things are good, I swear.
Well, dear reader, we did it! We made it through another week, and it’s Saturday night. Praise Jesus.
Need something to do other than doom-scrolling, laundry-folding, or staring into the fridge like it owes you answers? I’ve got you covered. Here’s a grab bag of internet gold: articles and podcasts that’ll make you think, recipes that might convince you to bust out the nice dishes, shows worth binging (because who needs sleep?), and books so good you’ll forget to charge your phone. Dive in—it’s way more fun than reorganizing your junk drawer. Probably.
Articles 📰
“How My Dad Reconciled His God and His Gay Son” by Timothy White at The New York Times (This is my must-read for the week. What a journey.)
“Bishop Budde Delivered a Truly Christian Message” by Elizabeth Breunig at The Atlantic
“Being Angry on the Internet” by Scott Erickson at Image Pilgramage
“The Social Media Sea Change” by Anne Helen Petersen at Culture Study
Podcasts 🎙️
“What Elon Musk Wants” — The Ezra Klein Show (Legendary tech reporter Kara Swisher is the guest)
“The Cons and Cons of Trump with Gov. Chris Christie” — The Weekly Show with Jon Stewart
“Connect to the Good Kid Underneath the Bad Behavior” — Good Inside with Dr. Becky
Recipes 🍳
Red Beans and Rice from NYTimes Cooking. I made this the other night and it was a hit!
Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup from Damn Delicious. It’s like chicken noodle soup, but maybe even better?
Banana Bread from Martha Stewart is our favorite. Instead of nuts, we add chocolate chips because, of course we do.
Shows 📺
We are still hooked on “Severance”. (WHAT IS HAPPENING.)
Scout has finished another watch-through of Brooklyn 99 and is now onto The Good Place. Holy forking shirtballs! She finds it hilarious, which is why she’s my kid.
Music 🎧
We’ve been listening to Kendrick Lamar in preparation for the Super Bowl this weekend! Linked to a playlist on Spotify to get you started.
Also, the new Mumford & Sons single is pretty good.
Books 📚
I’m reading The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins right now. Don’t come at me with the drama surrounding this book, I am already aware. I’m reading it for myself, because that’s what I do.
The book club picked All Fours by Miranda July. I absolutely hate the main character, which makes me think this is a great book. Any book that can evoke a deep response to a character, even if negative, is proof of good writing.
And there you have it—a weekend survival kit full of things to read, watch, listen to, and eat so you don’t accidentally spend hours debating whether that mystery container in the fridge is still edible. Go forth! And if all else fails, there’s always next weekend.
